Cathy Freeman inspires Matildas in surprise visit before Women's World Cup

Freeman spent time with the team while in Melbourne before the World Cup last year and was on hand again at Marvel

With kickoff to the Women's World Cup just days away, Olympic champion Cathy Freeman made a surprise visit to the Matildas on Monday

Freeman, who won the 400m gold medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, spent time with the team at their training base in Melbourne.

The Matildas are preparing for their opening match of the World Cup against Ireland on Thursday at Stadium Australia in Sydney Olympic Park.

Freeman's visit was a boost for the team, who are looking to make a strong start to the tournament.

"It was an honour to have Cathy visit us," said Matildas coach Tony Gustavsson.

"She is an inspiration to all Australians and her words of encouragement will give us a lot of confidence heading into the World Cup."

Freeman said she was impressed by the Matildas' preparation for the tournament.

"They are a very talented team and I know they are capable of great things," she said.

"I wish them all the best in the World Cup."
